Friends of Belmar Harbor presents:
Shark River Sailing & Science Academy
FOBH's Shark River Sailing & Science youth programs is entering the last few weeks of a successful summer. Parents are requested to keep an eye on the weather for possible early dismissals or cancelations. Due to the Covid environment, we do not have the usage of an inside classroom this summer.
We encourage our sailors who are turning at least 16 years old before next summer to earn their US Sailing Level 1 Instructor certificates and apply to become an instructor in 2022. See US Sailing website for information, or discuss this with one of our current sailing instructors.
Members are asked to join the SRSSA face book group page as this has become the main tool for communicating weekend boating hours. A reminder, we need safety boat drivers to stand by during any on water member activities. Becoming trained and volunteering as a safety boat driver is a great way to help the organization. Member on water activities are usually from 2 hours before high water to 2 hours after high water.
Due to covid, all social events, such as breakfast on the bay using the pontoon boat, has been canceled.
We will need assistance in September to prepare for the off season. Most important is knowledge how to winterize outboard engines but we also need help lifting boats and returning them to boat yard, and organization of boats and trailers in the boat yard.
It is important to note that the NJ Health Department lists individual sailing in their lowest risk category with multi person sailing being just one level higher. FOBH is dedicated to making the environment at our Shark River Sailing & Science Academy safe and low risk. We are dedicated and very much look forward to teaching our community youth life skills which are best learned through learning to sail, and introducing everyone about the natural wonders of our little bay.
Adult Sailing classes will only be offered through private lessons. note: Often fellow members are glad to take out other members and provide some beginning sailing lessons.
Membership for 2021 has ended, and due to covid, membership boating will close early this year. See the membership page for more information about becoming a member in 2022.
We continue to need Outboard specialist are very much needed and are eligible for a discount on membership dues.
Members are encourage to obtain a Safe Boating Certificate from the NJ State MVC to be able to maximize the enjoyment of boating.
All programs, activities, and events are subject to guidelines from US Sailing, the CDC, and state and local government and may be adjusted.
You may see a few of our staff and volunteers working on our boats and facilities. Please contact us if you have any interested in volunteering by sending an email to President@fobhnj.org and Dockmaster@fobhnj.org .
