Friends of Belmar Harbor presents:
Shark River Sailing & Science Academy
See our "about" page for updated introduction video.
Note: Anyone registering and if you recieve information that space is no longer available, please contact Geoff, the director of youth programs. We may have space being saved for township scholarships which is not being used.
The FOBH Board of Trustees has been in close communication with our host townships and are still hopeful that our Shark River Sailing & Science Academy Youth Programs will be available for the months of July and August in a limited version. Our current plans are based on activities being in the summer sun with plenty of fresh air and will take advantage of the natural social distancing offered by solo dinghy sailing.
Youth programs Week 1 and 2 has been canceled. Anyone registered for these programs will be able to transfer into another week or may request a full refund. These weeks will be spent on staff training and preparation.
Sailing will be offered in limited numbers allowing one student per boat unless the two sailors live in the same household. This includes the use of kayaks during days with no wind or for those attending Adventure Sailing. 420 boats may be solo sailed by main sail alone, or switch to sailing one of our Lasers. Advance sailors may solo sail using jib and main during a light breeze.
Shore side instruction and lunch will be done keeping six feet apart, bring a beach towel to sit on.
Face mask should be made of washable cloth and not paper, and will be worn while on the shore if that is still the guideline from state and local government.
Some of our staff are recommending face mask made by Birdwell Beach Britches since they are made from the same material as their stretch surf trunks. Order soon as it takes a month or longer to receive. UPDATE: Most junior sailors at many shore yacht clubs are preferring neck/face gaiters which are worn even while sailing as sun protection. We are hearing sailors purchasing from the following three websites: ; ; .
Discovery camp has been canceled due to social distancing rules and current guidelines from the Governor's office. We recommend transferring into a sailing camp as soon as possible. Contact our youth program director for transferring at no additional cost or getting a full refund.
Marine Environmental Science class has been canceled.
Due to social distancing, we will not use the classroom at the Shark River Hills Marina for inside instruction during inclement weather. Parents should be prepared for canceled days, or days with delayed openings or early dismissal.
All schedule regattas have been canceled.
All Membership activities have been canceled for 2020.
$50 Early Bird discount for non-members, Feb 1 to May 31 (extended discount).
