Sailing and Science Programs

We offer week-long programs throughout the summer for 8 to 16 year‐olds.  Join us for one week or the whole summer long.  Students can learn to sail or build on their past knowledge.  We have programs at all levels, from beginning sailing through advanced racing.  Classes are from 9am -3pm on weekdays starting June 24th running through Aug 12th.

Not yet ready to sail?  How about splashing around and getting to know our inlet through the Discovery Program (ages 7-11) where students start in human-powered watercraft and learn a bit about the body of water we live near.  Often they are passengers on the larger sailboats -- which is a great way to whet the appetite for future sail programs.

More interested in the harbor than sailing?  Our Marine Science program (ages 11-15) might be the right fit.  Explore, discover and research the Shark River via kayaks, paddle boards or the pontoon boat -- our new floating classroom.

Sailing

Beginner Optimist (Ages 8 ‐11)

This course will teach the basics of rigging a boat, basic boat handling, sailing fundamentals, seamanship (knots, weather, etc.), sportsmanship, and water safety. Instruction is done in Optimists with two sailors/boat.

Beginner 420s (Ages 12-16)

This course is for older and larger sailors who are new to sailing, or younger sailors with some experience but who are new to the 420. The course includes basics of rigging a 420, basic boat handling, seamanship (knots, weather, etc.), sportsmanship, and water safety.

Intermediate Optimist (Ages 9-12)

This course is designed for sailors who have completed Beginner Optimist. This course is for those sailors that want to continue their skill progression. Instruction is done in an Optimist, with 1 sailor/ boat. By completion, sailors will be able to sail on all points of sail in most windspeeds, know all parts of the boat, and basic knots. You will be expected to know and perform all goals learned in Beginner Optimist class.

Adv. 420s (Ages 12-16)

This course is for older and larger sailors who are new to sailing, or younger sailors with some experience but who are new to the 420. The course includes basics of rigging a 420, basic boat handling, seamanship (knots, weather, etc.), sportsmanship, and water safety.

Adventure (Ages 11-14)

This program is designed for the sailors who love sailing and want to be on the water but aren’t necessarily interested in racing. Adventure Sailing includes sailing several different types of boats including; 420s, Hartey 12s, O’Pen Bics, Hobie, along with using our stand‐up paddleboards and kayaks, and much more.

Science

Discovery Camp (Ages 7-11)

The Shark River Discovery Program seeks to provide an opportunity for community youths to experience the different wonders of the Shark River. The program combines recreational sailing and kayaking excursions with environmental education and more. Campers can get a feel for the sport of sailing, without the pressure of an instructional program. We will learn about the beautiful Shark River, the different ways we interact with it, and what we can do to keep it enjoyable for everybody.

Marine Science (Ages 11-16)

Marine Environmental Science program is a hands-on interdisciplinary exploration of the marine environment. It includes Marine Biology, Oceanography, Marine Ecology, and a little Meteorology. Our beautiful classroom is the Shark River, its tidal basin and bay shoreline. Most of the time will be spent on the water in kayaks, or small craft, or walking in the shallows and along the shore.
